The Truth is Out There!

Cryptozoology from Greek; kryptos "hidden" + zoology; literally, "study of hidden animals" refers to the search for animals whose existence has not yet been proven.

This includes looking for living examples of animals that are considered extinct and animals whose existence lacks physical evidence, as well as wild animals dramatically outside their normal geographic ranges. Cryptozoology relies upon anecdotal evidence, stories and alleged sightings.

Animals cryptozoologists study are often referred to as Cryptids, a term coined by John Wall in 1983.

A notable book on the subject is Willy Ley’sExotic Zoology (1959). Ley who was trained in paleontology wrote a number of books about animals. Ley's collection

Exotic Zoology is of some interest to Cryptozoology, as he discusses the Yeti and Sea Serpents, as well as dinosaurs. The book entertains the possibility that some legendary creatures like the Sirrush, the Unicorn or the Cyclops might be based on actual animals through misinterpretation of the animals and/or their remains.

There have been cases where species now accepted by science were initially considered Superstition or mis-identifications.

The Congo Okapi, the Mountain Gorilla, Giant Squid and Hoan Kiem Turtle are examples of extant species that were formerly thought to be cryptids.

The 2003 discovery of fossil remains of Homo Floresiensis was cited by paleontologist Henry Gee, editor of the journal Nature as possible evidence that humanoid cryptids like the Orang Pendek and Yeti were founded.

The Thylacine Thylacinus cynocephalus was the largest known Carnivorous marsupial in the World. Also known as the Tasmanian tiger, it was Native to Australia, Tasmania & PNG. It was declared Extinct in the 20th century.

The Thylacine was already extremely rare before European settlement, but it survived on the island state of Tasmania with several other Endemic species, including the Tasmanian Devil. Intensive hunting lead to total extinction

Despite its official classification as extinct, sightings are still reported!

The Yeti or Abominable Snowman is known as Migou by the lamas. A giant bipedal ape believed to be located in the Himalayan Forests. It is believed that the creature could be a distant relative of the Orangutan or a descendant of Ramapithecus who lived in these mountains for millions of years.

The Chuchana is the Russian version of the Yeti, which supposedly dwell in the eternal cold of Siberia. And in China there have been numerous alleged sightings over many decades of a similar creature known as the Yeren.

Creatures of the Deep

The Primitive Chimaera Fish are related to Sharks...

and are considered to be the most oldest enigmatic group of fish. They branched off from sharks nearly 400 million years ago and have remained isolated ever since. Confined to deep water, they live in temperate oceans depths of 2,600 metres (8,500 ft)

Deadly! Chimaeras have a highly Venomous dorsal spine located in front of the dorsal fin!

Travelers Tales of Giant Sea Serpentshave been reported for hundreds of years and continue to be claimed today. Cryptozoologist Bruce Champagne identified more than 1,200 purported sea serpent sightings.
